What Is a Health Box?

The term covers everything from a bag with a BP monitor to a complete digital clinic in a case. Here is how to tell them apart.

What Is a Health Box?
Micro Clinics

A health box is a portable case that carries health screening equipment to wherever people are. The term covers a wide range, from a basic kit with a blood pressure monitor and glucometer to a complete digital clinic with dozens of tests, AI analysis and a doctor on video.

Choosing between them depends on what you need the box to achieve. This guide compares the options.

The three types of health box

1. The basic screening kit

A bag with a few standalone devices: BP monitor, glucometer, thermometer, pulse oximeter and weighing scale. Readings are written on paper or typed into a phone.

2. The connected screening kit

Similar devices, but linked to an app that stores readings digitally. Some add a basic health summary.

3. The full portable clinic (Box Clinic)

A complete clinic in a case, such as the Clinics On Cloud Box Clinic. It connects medical-grade devices to an AI-powered platform engineered for 65+ clinical parameters, including ECG, HbA1c, haemoglobin, urine analysis and rapid infectious disease tests, with a built-in doctor teleconsultation.

Which health box do you need?

Choose a basic kit if you only need quick vitals checks, for example at a school sports day, and have a doctor nearby for anything abnormal.

Choose a connected kit if you want digital records of simple vitals for a small group, such as a home-care programme.

Choose a full Box Clinic if you need to:

  • Screen for diabetes, heart disease, anaemia and infections, not just take vitals
  • Give people a doctor's opinion the same day
  • Produce records and reports for a government, CSR or hospital programme
  • Work in villages, camps, worksites or disaster zones with no clinic nearby

Where a full health box makes the biggest difference

  • Rural outreach: screening camps where the nearest lab is hours away
  • Defence and border posts: care for personnel far from hospitals
  • Worksites and plants: occupational health checks without an on-site clinic
  • Schools: periodic student health checks with digital records
  • Emergency response: quick screening in relief camps

Our field guide to running a camp with a box clinic covers how these deployments run day to day.

What to check before buying a health box

  • Are the devices medical grade and certified?
  • Does it store data securely, to ISO 27001 and HIPAA standards?
  • Can a doctor review results remotely?
  • Does it work without internet?
  • Who handles training, maintenance and consumables?
