Entry · PC-05Preventive CareUnderstanding Body Age, Metabolic Rate, BMR, and BMI: A Step-by-Step Guide
Our body’s health can be measured in several ways. Concepts like body age, metabolic rate, BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), and
Body fat composition machines have become essential tools in the quest for health and fitness. These devices go beyond traditional weight scales to provide a deeper understanding of your body’s makeup, helping individuals track their fitness progress and health goals. In this guide, we’ll explore the features, benefits, and applications of body fat composition machine while integrating related too

A body fat composition machine is a screening device that estimates how a person’s body weight is distributed across fat, muscle, bone, water and other components, rather than reporting weight alone. On the Clinics On Cloud Health ATM, body composition sits within 19 general health parameters, part of 65+ clinical parameters across 14 specialties in a 10-minute checkup.
A body fat composition machine is a screening device that estimates the proportions of fat, muscle, bone, water and related components that make up a person’s body weight. A weighing scale tells you how heavy someone is. A body composition machine gives you an indication of what that weight is made of.
The output is a set of indicative estimates, not a diagnosis. Body composition readings are used to track change over time in the same person under similar conditions, which is where they are most useful, and are a poor basis for a one-off judgement about anyone’s health.
Clinics On Cloud builds body composition measurement into its Health ATM and Health Kiosk rather than selling it as an isolated product. Clinics On Cloud is India’s first CDSCO-licensed Health ATM and Health Kiosk manufacturer, based at Nighoje, Chakan MIDC, Pune.
The Clinics On Cloud machine reports 19 general health parameters, which include the body composition set alongside core vitals. The table below defines each one in plain language. No reference ranges or thresholds are given here on purpose: those belong to a qualified physician who knows the person’s age, sex, history and clinical context.
| Metric | What it describes | Why it is tracked |
|---|---|---|
| Height | Standing height, measured by the machine | Input for BMI and several derived estimates |
| Weight | Total body weight | The starting point every other metric is divided against |
| BMI (Body Mass Index) | Weight relative to height, as a single number | A population-level screening indicator, not a body-fat measurement |
| BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) | Estimated energy the body uses at complete rest | Used by dietitians as a baseline for planning |
| Body fat | Estimated share of body weight that is fat tissue | Distinguishes fat mass from everything else |
| Subcutaneous fat | Estimated fat stored directly under the skin | The layer visible and palpable at the surface |
| Visceral fat | Estimated fat stored around the organs in the abdominal cavity | Tracked separately because it behaves differently from subcutaneous fat |
| Fat-free weight | Estimated body weight excluding fat mass | Shows what is left when fat is set aside |
| Muscle mass | Estimated total muscle tissue | The metric fitness and rehabilitation programmes track most closely |
| Skeletal mass | Estimated skeletal muscle component | A narrower reading than total muscle mass |
| Bone mass | Estimated mineral content of the skeleton | Generally changes slowly, so used as a trend |
| Body water | Estimated total water content of the body | Highly sensitive to hydration, which is why measurement conditions matter |
| Protein | Estimated protein component of body composition | Read alongside muscle mass rather than alone |
| Metabolic age | A derived comparison of the person’s BMR against reference values for age groups | A motivational summary figure, not a clinical measure |
| Physique rating | A category label combining fat and muscle estimates | A summary descriptor, not a score of health |
| SpO2 | Blood oxygen saturation, measured by pulse oximetry | A core vital captured in the same session |
| Pulse | Heart rate | A core vital captured in the same session |
| Body temperature | Surface body temperature | A core vital captured in the same session |
| Blood pressure context | Captured on the same kiosk in the cardiac module | Read with composition data for wellness programmes |
Two terms cause the most confusion. Fat-free weight and muscle mass are not the same: fat-free weight includes bone, water and organs as well as muscle. And metabolic age is a derived, motivational figure, not a clinical measure of anything.
Body composition analysers in this category commonly use bioelectrical impedance analysis, or BIA. The device passes a very small, imperceptible electrical current through the body and measures the resistance it meets. Fat, muscle and water conduct differently, so the resistance pattern is used to estimate their proportions.
BIA produces estimates, and those estimates move with measurement conditions. Hydration status, recent exercise, a recent meal, footwear, time of day and skin contact quality all shift the reading. This is why any credible programme measures people under consistent conditions: same time of day, same preparation, same machine.
Other methods exist in clinical and research settings, including dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, which is a radiology procedure performed in a hospital or imaging centre and is not comparable to a self-service kiosk reading. Do not compare a BIA reading with a DEXA report and treat the difference as a machine fault.
On a Clinics On Cloud Health ATM, the composition measurement runs as one step of a 10-minute checkup: the user stands on the platform holding the handgrips, and the full 19-parameter general health set is captured in a single cycle before the machine moves on to blood pressure, ECG and the point-of-care tests.
Weight alone hides the two changes people most want to see. Someone can lose fat and gain muscle and see almost no movement on a scale, which is the single most common reason wellness programmes lose participants in month two.
A composition reading also separates two different things a scale cannot: where fat sits, and how much lean tissue is present. Subcutaneous and visceral fat are reported separately for exactly this reason.
For programme owners, the practical benefit is retention. A member who sees muscle mass rising while total weight holds steady stays enrolled. A member who sees only a flat scale reading leaves.
| Buyer | What they use it for | Measurement rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| Gyms and fitness centres | Baseline assessment at joining, then progress tracking | Monthly or on a training cycle |
| Nutrition and dietetics clinics | Objective inputs alongside a dietary plan set by the dietitian | Per consultation cycle |
| Corporate wellness programmes | Aggregate, de-identified wellness reporting and employee engagement | Quarterly or campaign-based |
| Wellness centres and spas | Guided assessment as part of a paid wellness package | Per package |
| Physiotherapy and rehabilitation | Tracking lean mass changes through a rehabilitation programme | As set by the clinician |
| Hospitals and preventive health desks | One component of a wider preventive screening | Within the annual checkup |
| Residential communities | Community wellness engagement | Campaign-based |
Corporate wellness buyers should note one thing before they start. Individual body composition data is personal health data. Report it to the individual, aggregate it for the employer, and put that boundary in writing before the first screening. The Health Lounge is built for exactly this setting, with a centralised multi-location dashboard for aggregate reporting.
| Standalone body composition analyser | Full screening kiosk with composition built in | |
|---|---|---|
| Parameters | Body composition set only | 65+ clinical parameters across 14 specialties |
| Time per user | Around 1-2 minutes | 10 minutes for a full checkup, less for short packages |
| Report | Composition report | Colour-coded multi-specialty report by print, SMS, email and WhatsApp |
| Follow-up | None built in | Integrated telemedicine consultation on flagged results |
| Records | Often local to the device | Digital health records with longitudinal tracking, ABHA linking available |
| Best for | Gym floors, nutrition clinics, single-purpose assessment | Clinics, corporates, pharmacies, PHCs and CHCs, mixed populations |
| Certification to check | Device-level | Device and platform: CDSCO, ISO 13485, US FDA, CE, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, VAPT |
Choose the standalone analyser when body composition is genuinely the whole job, as on a gym floor where a trainer is already interpreting the numbers. Choose the Clinics On Cloud Health Kiosk when the same population also needs blood pressure, blood sugar, lipid, ECG and vision screening, because a second visit for those never happens.
More on this trade-off in how to choose a health checkup machine by setting.
Standalone body composition analysers occupy the lower end of the health screening machine market, and price rises with the number of metrics reported, build quality and reporting software. A full screening kiosk with composition built in is a different purchase: indicative pricing for a Clinics On Cloud Health ATM starts from ₹6,00,000.
| Cost line | Standalone analyser | Screening kiosk with composition |
|---|---|---|
| Capital cost | Lower, single-purpose device | From ₹6,00,000 indicative, configuration-dependent |
| Consumables | Minimal | Test strips, lancets, cuffs, paper, per screening |
| Software and reporting | Often basic or device-local | Multi-location dashboard, longitudinal records, ABHA linking |
| Service and calibration | Device-level AMC | AMC covering device, platform and remote support |
| Follow-up capability | Not included | Integrated telemedicine on flagged results |
Pricing varies by configuration. Talk to the Clinics On Cloud team with your setting, expected daily volume and reporting requirement, and ask for both options priced side by side.
Read change, not a single number. One reading taken on one day under unknown conditions tells you very little. A series of readings taken under consistent conditions tells you something worth acting on.
Do not use a body composition report to set a target, a diet or a training load by yourself. Those decisions belong to a qualified physician, dietitian or trained professional who has the person’s full clinical context. A machine cannot know about a medication, a pregnancy, a thyroid condition or an implanted electronic device, and some of those matter a great deal for both the reading and the advice.
Treat every flagged result as a prompt to consult, not as a conclusion. Clinics On Cloud kiosks offer an integrated telemedicine consultation immediately after a screening for this reason, and across the network 2 lakh+ abnormalities have been detected and routed for early intervention.
If you need the wider clinical picture, see clinical parameters offered by a health kiosk and what a full body checkup machine is.
If body composition is one requirement among several, read the full body health checkup machine buyer’s guide and what a Health ATM is. To scope a gym, clinic or corporate site, call +91 8999 073 447, Monday to Saturday, 9:00 to 18:00 IST, or email sales@clinicsoncloud.com.

A body fat composition machine estimates how body weight is distributed across fat, muscle, bone and water. On the Clinics On Cloud Health ATM the general health set covers 19 parameters, including BMI, BMR, body fat, subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, fat-free weight, muscle mass, skeletal mass, bone mass, body water, protein, metabolic age and physique rating, alongside core vitals.
Standalone body composition analysers sit at the lower end of the screening equipment market, priced by metric count, build quality and reporting software. A full screening kiosk with composition built in starts from an indicative ₹6,00,000 for a Clinics On Cloud Health ATM, with the final figure depending on configuration, integration and order volume. Request both options priced together.
For tracking a wellness or fitness programme, yes, because a scale cannot distinguish fat loss from muscle gain. Someone can change substantially in composition while their total weight barely moves. Composition readings are estimates rather than measurements, so they are most useful as a trend under consistent conditions, not as a single verdict.
Clinics On Cloud states device accuracy of 90-95%, depending on the specific test and device, under correct usage, calibration and patient preparation. Bioelectrical impedance readings are sensitive to hydration, recent meals, recent exercise and contact quality. Measure people under consistent conditions and compare readings only against their own history on the same machine.
A gym with trainers who interpret the numbers on the floor can start with a standalone analyser. A gym that also wants blood pressure, blood sugar, lipid or ECG screening for members should buy a full screening kiosk instead, because members will not make a second trip elsewhere for those tests. Price both before deciding.
Yes, and it is one of the most common deployments. The rule to set first is data handling: individual results go to the individual, and the employer receives aggregate, de-identified reporting only. The Clinics On Cloud Health Lounge and Health Kiosk support this through a centralised multi-location analytics dashboard.
Visceral fat is the estimated fat stored around the organs in the abdominal cavity, as distinct from subcutaneous fat stored directly under the skin. Screening devices report them separately because they behave differently. The reading is indicative only and any concern about it should be discussed with a qualified physician rather than acted on directly.
Metabolic age is a derived figure that compares a person’s estimated basal metabolic rate against reference values for different age groups. It is a motivational summary rather than a clinical measurement, and it is not used by clinicians to assess health. Treat it as an engagement number in a wellness programme, not as a medical result.
Frequency should follow the programme, not the machine. Fitness and nutrition programmes commonly re-measure on a monthly or training-cycle rhythm, while corporate wellness campaigns often run quarterly. Measuring too often produces noise, because hydration and recent meals move readings more than real change does over short intervals.
Clinics On Cloud, the brand of SehatPro Technologies Pvt Ltd, manufactures health screening machines at Nighoje, Chakan MIDC, Pune, and is India’s first CDSCO-licensed Health ATM and Health Kiosk manufacturer. Body composition is built into its Health Kiosk, Health Lounge, Box Clinic and Mobile Medical Unit rather than sold as a standalone device.
