Health kiosk in Varanasi

A Health ATM is a self-service screening station that captures vitals, body composition and selected blood, urine, cardiac and sensory parameters, then issues an instant colour-coded report. It does not diagnose. It screens and it flags.

In most cities the buyer question is which organisation pays. In Varanasi the harder question is which venue. The city carries three populations at once: permanent residents in dense old-city mohallas, a working population in weaving, trade, hospitality and transport, and a very large transient population of pilgrims, students and visitors here for days rather than years.

That third group is unusual. Transient visitors are registered with no local facility, will not book a lab appointment for a three-day stay, and are frequently elderly and far from home. A screening station placed where they wait is one of the few realistic ways to reach them at all. Dharamshalas, ashrams, trust-run guest houses and hotels around Godowlia, Dashashwamedh, Assi and the Sarnath road host visitors who arrive tired after overnight journeys and then walk several kilometres of ghat steps a day.

For a trust or hotel operator the value is hospitality risk management. A guest who checks blood pressure, blood sugar and SpO2 on arrival, and gets a flagged reading routed to a live teleconsultation, is less likely to become an emergency in the lobby. Hotels around the Cantonment and Nadesar belt also run long shifts with high turnover, and one lobby-adjacent unit covers guests and staff together.

Varanasi Cantt railway station, Banaras station at Manduadih, the Cantonment roadways bus stand and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur are the city’s arrival points, and many people passing through are travelling for medical treatment as well as pilgrimage.

Waiting halls are the best kiosk environment in transport: people are stationary with a defined block of dead time, and a 10-minute checkup fits inside the wait for a delayed train. Unattended operation matters, since no station buyer will fund an attendant.

Varanasi is the referral hub for eastern Uttar Pradesh and adjoining districts of Bihar. The cluster runs from the Sir Sunderlal Hospital at Banaras Hindu University to the district hospital and the Kabir Chaura government complex in the old city, plus private hospitals along the Cantonment, Bhelupur and Lanka corridors.

Outpatient departments here hold queues of people who have travelled from Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Azamgarh and across the Bihar border. Place the kiosk at the front of that queue, so a waiting patient reaches the doctor with vitals, blood pressure, blood sugar, body composition and, where configured, ECG and lipid results already recorded.

Banaras Hindu University’s campus at Lanka is a self-contained township with residential halls, staff quarters and a health centre. Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University and the colleges along the Sarnath and Bhelupur roads add more resident student populations.

A campus kiosk runs baseline screening for incoming students, staff annual checks and hostel follow-up without referring every case to a lab. Vision, hearing, anaemia, body composition and mental health screening including PHQ-9 and GAD-7 are the groups campus buyers use most.

Varanasi’s silk weaving and handloom trade runs through Madanpura, Lallapura, Bajardiha, Lohta, Ramnagar and out into Chandauli and Bhadohi district. Most units are small: a few looms in a room, often in a home, with power looms adding noise and airborne fibre.

This is an occupational screening venue, not a welfare one. Fine fibre dust, poor ventilation, long seated hours and close visual work over a loom are the exposures a weaver lives with, so pulmonary function including PEF, FVC, FEV and FEV1/FVC, near and far vision, hearing and general vitals are the configuration that makes sense. Because individual units are too small to fund a kiosk, the buyer is normally a weavers’ cooperative, a common facility centre, an exporter covering its supply chain, or a CSR programme.

Retail pharmacy lines outside the hospital gates at Kabir Chaura, Lanka and Bhelupur, and the chemist trade through Sigra, Mahmoorganj and Pandeypur, are commercial venues. Here a kiosk is a footfall asset: a customer screens while a prescription is filled and the operator gains a reason for the return visit. Footprint is about one retail bay plus a power point, which is why single-unit enquiries in Varanasi come mostly from this venue type.

Ramnagar holds the older industrial base, and the UPSIDC estates and the Chandauli side carry engineering, food processing, cold storage and locomotive supply-chain units. Employers here run a fixed shift workforce, the simplest screening population there is. Put the unit at the gate and screen at shift change: screening that costs ten minutes of a shift happens, screening that costs a day of wages does not.

Large parts of Varanasi cannot take a fixed kiosk. The galis behind Dashashwamedh, Vishwanath Gali, Bengali Tola and the mohallas around Madanpura are too narrow for four-wheel access and have no room to spare at ground level. A hotel lobby unit and a cooperative screening programme are quoted differently, so send the venue, the sessions per day and the parameter groups you need.

Site needs are light: a covered indoor position, a standard power point, and no compulsory data connection, because the kiosk works offline and syncs later. Battery backup runs 3 to 4 days, which matters at riverside sites, and voice guidance is what makes an unassisted session possible for a Bhojpuri-speaking user who reads little.

A prepared site is surveyed, delivered, commissioned and handed over within days.
